Interestingly there isn’t a single word in the whole article about higher education, yet Northeast Texas Community College stands to lose nearly $6 million under the House version of the budget bill. That is a huge number (approximately 50% of annual payroll) which will negatively impact a region already economically distressed because of the elimination of salaried positions with the closure of Pilgrim’s headquarters in Pittsburg, TX. By the way, enrollment at NTCC has increased approximately 25% over the last 2 years.
One budget version proposes complete elimination of the Communities in Schools program. Read about the history of and successes of this program here

The College has a very well-developed CIS program which works with Titus County Cares and other organizations in the region to provide resources and support for at-risk students and their families.
